The road that is awaited with eager anticipation has now received the final green light and can proceed without any obstacles in its way. The environmental authorisation for the K109-link was granted in May 2011, but placed in jeopardy a few weeks later by 5 residents (1) from Midstream when they appealed against the department’s decision.

Shortly after construction commenced in September on the section north of Brakfontein Road the work came to a halt when the MEC for the provincial department suspended the authorisation on 5 October 2011. The MEC has now advised that the appeals have been considered and were dismissed and that the earlier imposed suspension of construction work has been lifted. This now clears the way for construction on the K109-link road to proceed. With the environmental authorisation reinstated, the road recently being proclaimed by Gautrans and permission obtained from the Tshwane Metro to commence with construction of the Nellmapius intersection, construction can now proceed on all fronts. Due to the 3 week de-lay, the completion of the project is now expected in February 2012.

Note: (1) - Originally 18 residents appealed by submitting carbon copies of the same document. Over time, how-ever, the number dwindled to five
